Bizarre Scenes [Scene Bizare] – based on Urmuz
“I have always been drawn to the universe of the absurd, to this alienation that is haunting modern Man in the increasingly slippery space between word and meaning. For Urmuz, words do not require logic and sense. Freed from this requirement that is at the foundation of the illusion of communication, words become fluid and versatile raw materials for the imagination. Urmuz has also helped me to discover the comic, insofar as his characters are disenfranchised, and peripheral beings, at times transformed by the author into an agglomeration of objects. They are condemned to a mechanical existence that breathes the same putrid air as Beckett’s or Ionesco’s characters. Since Urmuz did not originally write for the stage, however, the truly challenging task for me as adaptor and director has been to transpose the musicality of his text into dialogue.
The world in which we live is an ‘Urmuzian’ world par excellence, in the sense that it is rooted in violence through and through. The cruelty in the writings of Urmuz is the cruelty we often come across day to day, which is why Urmuz is, surprisingly, our contemporary.”

“Mereu am fost atrasă de universul absurdului, de această alienare care îl pândește pe omul modern în spațiul tot mai accidentat dintre cuvânt și sens. La Urmuz, cuvântul nu pretinde necesitatea logicii și sensului. Decorticat de această pretenție, care fundamentează iluzia comunicării, cuvântul devine o materie fluidă pentru spațiul imaginar. Prin Urmuz am redescoperit comicul. Personajele lui sunt ființe inconștiente, periferice, transformate uneori de autor într-o aglomerare de obiecte. Ele sunt condamnate la o o existenţă maşinală care respiră acelaşi aer putred, ca eroii beckettieni sau ca personajele ionesciene.
Partea cu adevărat dificilă a fost să transpun muzica textului urmuzian în dialog.
Lumea în care trăim este o lume urmuziană prin excelenţă, iar atunci când spun urmuziană, vreau să spun că este violentă prin excelenţă. Cruzimea din scrierile lui Urmuz este cruzimea cu care ne întâlnim deseori. Urmuz este, în mod surprinzător, contemporanul nostru.”
