Empress Sissi or Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, known as Princess Sissi, was the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary in the 19th century. She was known for her rare beauty and for her love story with Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria.
The production Sissi staged at the Apollo Baths is based on the eponymous poetic work by Pavel Șusară, illustrated with drawings by Mircea Bochiș. I was inspired by the statements of local residents, who convinced me to direct this show about the spectre of Sissi that is still ‘haunting’ Băile Herculane (known as Herkulesbad in Sissi’s time) and the Apollo Baths.
‘A spectre from another time manifests itself here and there in town. Several people have spotted it hovering about in the course of starry autumn nights. It lingers close to the ground, in the Central Park or above the stone bridge, and pauses for a few moments by the statue of Hercules. In 2008, a couple in love happened to be strolling among the buildings in town, taking pictures every now and then. Not far from the statue of Hercules, a figure dressed in a floaty white dress emerged from one of these pictures. It was a beautiful woman, with a somewhat blurry face. Rumour has it that she is only visible to those couples who are in love, strolling in Central Park, like it was customary in the good old days. Others claim that the lady in white keeps watch over the old buildings in the town centre, built during the imperial times, which are now left neglected. They also say that this beautiful ghost is in fact a princess, who keeps vanishing yet still lingers behind nonetheless, in order to protect Băile Herculane and the Cerna Valley. She has in fact been seen in the dense woods on top of the nearby mountains, too, and during clear winter nights, the steam of the thermal waters even adopts the shape of a princess. This is most certainly none other than Empress Sissi herself, taking her time revisiting the places where she had been once really happy.’

Împărăteasa Sissi sau Elisabeta de Wittelsbach, numită și Prințesa Sissi, a fost împărăteasa Austriei și regina Ungariei în secolul al XIX-lea. A fost cunoscută pentru frumusețea ei și pentru povestea de dragoste cu împăratul Franz Joseph al Austriei.
Spectacolul Sissi de la Băile Apollo are ca punct de pornire cartea de poezie -Sissi de Pavel Șusară, ilustrată cu desenele artistului Mircea Bochiș.
Mărturiile localnicilor au fost însă cele care au convins-o pe regizoare să facă acest spectacol despre năluca lui Sissi care încă “bântuie” în Băile Apollo, după cum ea însăși povestește :
”O nălucă din alte vremuri se arată ici şi colo, prin oraş. Câţiva au văzut-o plutind în serile de toamnă senine şi pline de stele. Alunecă nu mult pe deasupra pământului, prin Parcul Central sau peste Podul de piatră şi se opreşte, pentru câteva clipe, la statuia lui Hercule. În 2008, doi îndrăgostiţi se plimbau printre clădirile din Herculane. Din loc în loc, făceau fotografii. Nu departe de statuia lui Hercule, într-una din poze a apărut o siluetă îmbrăcată într-o rochie aburoasă şi albă. O femeie frumoasă, cu chip uşor neclar. Unii spun că ea li se arată îndrăgostiţilor care se plimbă prin Parcul Central, ca-n vremurile de aur. Alţii, că doamna albă păzeşte cu străşnicie clădirile vechi din centrul imperial al oraşului, încolţite azi de paragină. Şi că apariţia frumoasă e, de fapt, o prinţesă. O prinţesă care pleacă, dar rămâne, totuşi, în preajmă mereu, pentru a ocroti Băile Herculane şi Valea Cernei. A fost văzută şi prin pădurile dese din munţi. Iar în nopţile clare de iarnă, aburul apelor termale capătă, şi el, trup de prinţesă. Cu siguranţă este împărăteasa Sissi, care vrea să întârzie în locurile unde a fost fericită”.
